Los Angeles-based indie-rock outfit Crashing Hotels recently unveiled the music video, “For a Sunburn,” a track from their upcoming album, Trophic Cascade, which probes the looming climate change crisis.
Produced, recorded, and mixed by Ao Anderson (keyboards, bass), the song was mastered by Christian Wright and features Habbert Cheeks III on drums.
Crashing Hotels’ sound blends degrees of indie rock, dream-pop, and psychedelia into sui generis music composed by songwriter Ao Anderson, who eschews listening to music to escape the snare of external influences. He also believes the earth is now caught up in an imminent destructive cycle that cannot be stopped.
Opening on shimmering, swirling synths topped by a high falsetto, “For a Sunburn” merges warm sonic colors riding a mid-tempo rhythm. Layers of creamy, effervescent textures imbue the tune with lustrous, glossy leitmotifs, rippling with hints of delicious dream-pop.
“Do do do” harmonies give the song glowing depth and dimension, adding to the array of silky-smooth colors.
The video, animated by Zoe Pham and directed by Phan and Anderson, is at once vibrantly colored and lysergic, transporting viewers back to the ‘70s, as eddying hues form kaleidoscopic images. Similar to an acid-fueled trip, the video delivers a polychromatic audio-visual experience of wonderful pigments and a mood-altering soundscape.
